In the conversation, Dan walks through the path that led him to 3Degrees, from growing up in a working-class mill town in Massachusetts, to studying economics at Dartmouth and working in consulting, to business school at Stanford where a lunch talk on renewable energy changed his direction. He went on to join Three Phases Energy as an early employee, helping build one of the first corporate renewable energy offerings based on renewable energy credits, before spinning out 3Degrees in 2007. Today, the company works with more than 80 Fortune 500 companies, has supported over 20,000 decarbonization projects, helped bring more than 12 gigawatts of clean energy online, and generates over a billion dollars in annual revenue.

Dan Kalafatas is a pioneering architect of the global corporate decarbonization movement. As the Co-Founder, former CEO, and Board Chairman of 3Degrees, Dan has spent nearly 25 years at the vanguard of environmental markets, transforming a belief that business must be the primary engine for solving the climate crisis into a global force. Under his leadership, 3Degrees has expanded into one of the world’s premier providers of renewable energy and decarbonization solutions to global enterprises with over $1B in revenue helping over 80 Fortune 500 partners navigate the global complexities of net-zero strategies.

In addition to his role at 3Degrees, Dan actively invests in clean energy infrastructure, companies, and tax attributes. He is a guest instructor at Dartmouth and Stanford, and a global voice at the intersection of climate, finance, and policy on topics including the AI power crisis, supply chain decarbonization, and the future of the carbon markets.

Beyond his corporate leadership, Dan serves on the advisory board of the Dartmouth Irving Institute for Energy & Society, Dartmouth Climate Collaborative, and 1 World, and chairs the board of the conservation trust, Northern Sierra Partnership.

Dan holds an MBA with a Certificate in Public Management from the Stanford Graduate School of Business and a B.A. in Economics with Honors from Dartmouth College. He resides just north of the Golden Gate Bridge, where he lives with his wife of 26 years and their three college- and high school-aged children.

"You have to believe you're right. You are told so many times that you’re wrong, so you have to be able to look past that. And the skill of being able to do that can be a dangerous skill later."
