Africa is becoming a dynamic market for clean, distributed energy. But incomplete and unreliable electricity grids are hampering the growth of clean energy across the continent. So Ugwem Eneyo built SHYFT, a platform that makes it simple to optimize distributed energy resources and integrate them with centralized power grids. In this episode, Ugwem discusses her path as a Nigerian-American, from the oil industry to Stanford to an unexpected turn to entrepreneurship.

Ugwem Eneyo is Nigerian-American engineer, inventor, and entrepreneur. Based on her research as an MS/PhD student in Civil & Environmental Engineering at Stanford, Ugwem co-founded SHYFT Power Solutions, which enables businesses and energy providers to seamlessly optimize the performance and operational efficiency of distributed energy resources. As CEO, Ugwem has raised nearly $4 million in seed funding to expand SHYFT's platform across Nigeria. Previously, she worked as an Environmental and Regulatory Risk Advisor for infrastructure projects throughout South Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Ugwem has been named to Forbes 30 Under 30 in Energy, Climate & Capital Media's Ten to Watch, and received a host of other recognitions.

“The #1 thing I would tell other founders is to find your allies, find people that will lift you up, cheer you on, be tough on you when needed, and be honest with you all the time. And everything else is just noise.”
